The Hague is the first Dutch city to receive the EU mission label for sustainability
On October 8, the municipality of The Hague was the first and only Dutch city to receive the EU mission label ‘100 climate neutral and smart cities in 2030’. We receive this recognition because the municipality of The Hague is a leader in Europe with its innovative climate activities and ambitions. This recognition is a boost for the residents of The Hague, entrepreneurs, and in particular the signatories of the Hague Climate Agreement.
With this label, The Hague joins a select group of 53 European cities that can become climate-neutral faster according to the European Commission. The Commission supports the municipality’s plans to quickly reduce or compensate for greenhouse gas emissions in the city. Extra attention is paid to how the municipality does this together with the city. For example, the European Commission considers the Hague Climate Agreement to be a good example of cooperation and participation. The agreement contains no fewer than 38 climate deals concluded by 115 parties (companies, entrepreneurs, governments, social and international organisations, and residents of The Hague).
“Receiving the EU mission label is not only a recognition of our efforts, but also an important step forward for the city of The Hague. This European recognition enables us to work faster and more effectively towards a climate-neutral future. Together with the city, we make The Hague greener and more liveable.“

What does the mission label bring for The Hague?
With the label, the European Commission supports The Hague in realising its climate ambitions. For instance, The Hague is speaking to the European Investment Bank on possible financial cooperation and support.
This label helps The Hague in international cooperation, knowledge exchange, and European funding. As a result, projects in The Hague, such as the agreements in the Hague Climate Accord, can be accelerated. In doing so, we improve mobility, air quality, and liveability in our city.
