New U.S. policies threatening the enforcement of whistleblower and anti-corruption laws demand new tactics for fighting corruption. In this event, U.S. whistleblower experts from leading whistleblower law firm, Kohn, Kohn & Colapinto LLP (KKC), as well as the National Whistleblower Center (NWC) will address the new realities and necessary solutions.
Since 1988, the NWC and KKC have led the development of U.S. whistleblower and anti-corruption laws that have been used to enforce anti-bribery and money laundering laws worldwide. They are the attorneys behind some of the largest whistleblower cases, including Howard Wilkinson’s exposure of a $230 billion Russian money laundering scheme and Bradley Birkenfeld’s exposure of a $780 million tax fraud scheme by UBS.
The National Whistleblower Center has been at the forefront of developing and advocating for powerful anti-corruption laws like the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, the Dodd-Frank Act, and the Anti-Money Laundering Whistleblower Improvement Act. These laws have been utilized by whistleblowers worldwide and resulted in billions of dollars in recoveries.
Foreign governments and anti-corruption civil societies have long relied on the U.S. framework as a deterrent, regulation, and enforcement for corruption. With these effective U.S. laws now under attack, it is vital that governments and civil society leaders concerned about transnational corruption work urgently to strengthen their anti-corruption and whistleblower protection.
This event will introduce members of the Humanity Hub and other groups and persons concerned with fighting corruption to the resources available from KKC and the NWC to aid in their advocacy. Recent trends in the U.S. impacting global anti-corruption efforts will be discussed, along with potential solutions to fill the enforcement void caused by changes in U.S. policy.
